Frolic tech: Microsoft Surface Computer

If theres a better piece of gadget eye candy Id like to see it Microsoft Surface is a touchscreen computer that allows you to interact with pieces of digital content as if they were physical objects on the table - to move, expand and even transfer content between physical devices, to create a music play list through drag and drop using your fingers. It even recognizes physical objects on the table and allows you to interact with them, from a wifi camera to a beer glass (so you can order another). Take a look at this video over on TechCrunch that shows how easy it can be to transfer a picture straight off of a digital camera to the table, then from the table to a smart phone, without using any wires, just regular wireless network technology.   First users of the $10,000 device are retail outlets, restaurants and bars, and casinos. Frolic Gadget : Fart smell measuring Gadget

Image
Is There a Scientific Way to Measure How Bad a Fart Smells? For their senior project, two Cornell University computer-engineering whizzes recently built a machine that measures smell for the farts. After learning in class how breathalyzers work, Robert Clain and Miguel Salas assembled a fart detector from a sensitive hydrogen sulfide monitor, a thermometer and a microphone and wrote the software that would rate the emission. A “slight perturbance in the air” near the detector sets it to work measuring the three pillars of fart quality: stench, temperature and sound. Temperature, Clain explains, is critical. The hotter a fart, the faster it spreads. “It beeps faster if it’s a high ranker, and a voice rates it on a scale of zero to nine,” he says. “If it ranks a nine, a fan comes on to blow it away. It even records the noise so you can play it back later.” After a few months of construction, they began field tests. “Well, the sample data wasn’t the entire school, but we defin...

Powering Homes With Wireless Energy From Space.

Image
Japan Wants to Power 300,000 Homes With Wireless Energy From Space. Japan has serious plans to send a solar-panel-equipped satellite into space that could wirelessly beam a gigawatt-strong stream of power down to earth and power nearly 300,000 homes. The satellite will have a surface area of four square kilometers, and transmit power via microwave to a base station on Earth. Putting solar panels in space bypasses many of the difficulties of installing them on Earth: in orbit, there are no cloudy days, very few zoning laws, and the cold ambient temperature is ideal.   A small test model is scheduled for launch in 2015. To iron out all the kinks and get a fully functional system set up is estimated to take three decades. A major kink, presumably, is coping with the possible dangers when a 1-gigawatt microwave beam aimed at a small spot on Earth misses its target. The $21 billion project just received major backing from Mitsubishi and designer IHI (in ...

Technology to Re-Ice Artic to save earth

Image
Location: Near Greenland Project Cost: $50 billion The Problem : Arctic ice is melting, diluting the salty seas with freshwater and, many suspect, weakening the ocean currents that help regulate the global climate by transporting heat around the globe. If these currents were to shut down, the consequences would be unpredictable and dire: immense loss of marine life and fisheries; a reduction in the ability of the ocean to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere; and, some scientists speculate, drastic cooling of Northern Europe. The Fix: Make more Arctic ice, and make it salty. Under normal conditions, warm-water currents like the Gulf Stream carry heat from the tropics to Europe. After a current releases its heat, the water sinks (cold water is more dense than warm; salty more dense than fresh) and flows back to the equatorial regions along the ocean floor. This sinking is the engine that powers global currents. But in one apocalyptic scenario, melted Arctic ice d...

Insulating Glaciers to save earth.

Image
Location: Swiss Alps The Problem Glaciers-Earth's largest freshwater reservoir, collectively covering an area the size of South America-are melting away, shrinking by up to hundreds of feet per year in some places. The Alps alone stand to lose three quarters of its glaciers by 2050, and what's left by the end of the century. The Fix Wrap thawing glaciers in football-field-size synthetic blankets that keep the cold in and the heat out. At least that's what ski resorts in the Swiss Alps are doing. Tired of risking the fate of their industry on the global community's ability to get a grip on rapid climate change, more than a dozen resorts turned to local textile company Fritz Landolt to stop the melting. Called the Ice Protector, Landolt's material is a tough but lightweight dual-layer composite. On top is polyester to reflect ultraviolet light, and on the bottom is polypropylene, a polymer used in military clothing and auto parts, to block heat. When wrapped around a ...

NASA Levitates Mice in Magnetic Field

Image
Researchers have levitated small mice in a powerful magnetic field that simulates the gravity-free world of space. Their work calls attention to a technology that could help unravel a range of phenomena from the physics of fluids to the genetic underpinnings of osteoporosis. The research by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., is intended to supplement and verify experiments conducted aboard the International Space Station, which last month received its first batch of mice for a long-duration stay. "We can use this facility to create microgravity for a long period of time," lead researcher Yuanming Liu told. "We can study if prolonged exposure to reduced gravity can have a long-term impact on the physiology of the mouse." Levitation devices that generate magnetic fields to counter the tug of gravity have been around for several years, though none have been large enough to float something as big as a mouse. Bruce Hammer, a...

Mirror that reflects From any angle

Image
A universal mirror, an object that reflects all light waves back at their source, has been created by scientists in Europe and Asia. Imagine a tennis player hitting a ball against a wall. The ball would bounce right back to the player no matter what angle he or she directed the shot. A universal mirror has the same effect, except with light waves. Unlike an ordinary mirror, which only reflects objects at 90 degrees, a universal mirror reflects objects back at any angle. In other words, a person positioned in front of a large, optical universal mirror would see his or her own reflection perfectly no matter where the person stands. "(A universal mirror) makes things become very visible," said Ulf Leonhardt, a professor at the University of St. Andrews and co-author of a paper in the current issue of Nature Materials . "It's the exact opposite of an invisibility cloak ." Unlike a universal mirror, an invisibility cloak guides light waves around an object in o...

Nokia 6639 7megapixel camera phone

Image
We usually try to avoid the extra sci-fi concepts, in order to check out the more realistic ones, but this one’s too funny. Nokia 6639 is something that would probably never hit the streets this decade or the next. It features a Swiss army knife , a zippo lighter and a digital SLR camera (double digit megapixels) plus Photoshop. Notice that ton of brands in the picture above. Imagine Sony Ericsson and Nokia working on the same device… I can pretty much imagine what each company contributed to the Nokia 6639 cameraphone, but what’s Volkswagen doing there?
